The area known as tal-Baqqari and the neighbouring ta’ Hlantun were medieval hamlets that had two small, 12th or 13th century churches with a shared parvis which was used as a burial ground. It is documented that the area had several Punic and Roman remains and the churches were built on a site where there was probably an earlier pagan temple.
The churches were dedicated to the Annunciation of Our Lady and to St Catherine of Alexandria.
As the village of Zurrieq grew in the 15th and 16th century, these outlying hamlets became deserted. Some relics from abandoned churches are now generally found in the parish church as is the case with archaeological remains housed in the sacristy of St. Catherine of Alexandria parish church, Zurrieq.
