Selmun Palace

Selmun Palace

Once we reach Selmun Palace we turn right towards the Church of Our Lady of Ransom.

This Church takes its name from the history of Selmun Palace which – was not built for defense purposes- but as a hunting lodge and place of entertainment for nobility and the knights of St. John.

It was built with funds from the Monte Della Redenzione degli Schiavi (Monte di Pieta’) which was a charity established by Grandmaster Wignacourt in 1607. However, the Palace itself was built in the late sixteenth century. Revenue from the tower was directed to redeeming or ransoming Christian seafarers taken as captives.
