The 2nd day of the Melitae Mariana pilgrimage starts from the Dominican friary in Rabat, built over the cave church “Madonna tal-Ghar”.
According to legend a hunter who took shelter in a cave and, falling into a deep sleep had a apparition of Mother Mary. This legend goes back to the 14th century and the inhabitants of medieval Rabat built a church where – according to legend – the hunter saw Our Lady.
In 1450 the Dominicans built a friary and church dedicated to Our Lady on top of the grotto and also – by default became custodians of the trogoldyte church.

From the Dominican friary our pilgrimage continues to the area of Nigret and Ghar-Barka in the direction of Lunzjata Valley and the troglodyte church of St Leonard (San Anard) and the church of the Annunication, both under the custody of the Carmelite Order.
